The latter still had to fight for what his is father had given him.     Even so the poet's task was not easy ; if he sang about groups of men in action, he risked losing the interest of his audience, but if he concentrated on individuals, he might merely give a series of duels, bearing little resemblance to any real battle. Some poet must have originated the idea of a dignified Helen, but there in no adequate reason for identifying him with the man who first sang a long poem on the wrath of Achilles, whether the latter poet lived in the fifteenth century or the eighth or the sixth ; if the Iliad and the Odyssey both treat Helen with respect, it does not necessarily follow that one poem imitates the other, since both may follow a common model.

    Probably their fortunes were shared by other dealers in epic verse — that is; the rhapsodes of the fourth century were mere reciters, but those of the sixth and early fifth century were to some extent composers as well as reciters ; some may have been pure composers. Many Greek oral poets appealed to the Muses for help, and often for detailed information That is what students have in fact found.

Sir Maurice Bowra 42 has shown that Stesichoros promoted the legendary claims of the Spartans over the Péloponnèse and attacked stories favourable to Argos. Leumann summarizes his results in so far as they have a bearing on the composition of the Iliad pp. Cynaethos, late in the sixth century, seems to have revised traditional poetry, adding something of his own, but accepting much from his predecessors i3.

    He must have been a Greek, since he was allowed to compete, but his name is not Greek. Such an interpretation is indeed linguistically possible, but normally when Herodotas moves his story to events considerably earlier, he makes quite clear what he is doing ; he does not confine his warning to a single particle Tyranny was not a magistracy, but the Cypselids may have held annual magistracies occasionally, just as the Peisistratids did.
